Abstract

Learning to read in primary school is divided into two stages, namely beginning reading and reading comprehension. Reading skills need to be developed as early as possible because reading is a fundamental foundation for students’ learning. However, several obstacles are often found, such as limited references to reading stages, lack of teacher guidance in summarizing reading content, and low student enthusiasm for reading activities. This study employed Classroom Action Research consisting of two cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this research were 11 sixth-grade students of State Primary School 023 Kijang Island, Reteh District. The purpose of this study was to improve students’ reading skills through the application of the Think, Predict, Read, and Connect (TPRC) strategy. The results showed that the initial average score of students’ reading skills was 59.7, categorized as moderate. In Cycle I, the average score increased to 76.03 in the high category, while in Cycle II it further increased to 88.9 in the very high category. Overall, the improvement from the initial condition to Cycle II reached 29.2 points. These findings indicate that the implementation of the TPRC strategy effectively improves the reading skills of sixth-grade students at State Primary School 023 Kijang Island, Reteh District.
